Specialist software

This module introduces students to modern Operating Systems with a focus on security. The main topics covered will include basic OS concepts such as processes, memory management, drivers and file systems. Programming software is considered to be a subset of system software, although there is debate regarding this.

  • Prior to wireless access to networks, setting up a network that everyone could connect to in a business required miles of cables running through walls and ceilings.
  • You will learn methods to analyse and compare algorithms and their constituent parts in order that you may better design, evaluate and develop effective, efficient and performant software solutions.
  • Therefore companies don’t want their investment shared without recompense.

There’s also the opportunity to specialise in the areas that interest you most – ending with a major individual software project. Previous topics have included, a run planner and diary, a wind farm simulation, modelling a self driving car and an app to find and join in with live, location-based events. Utility software is designed to analyse and optimise a device. Most applications are closed source in that they do not expose the original code. It started in 1991 when compression software wasn’t included in Windows.

In 1936, Alan Turing proposed the Turing Machine as a universal model of a computing engine. A Turing Machine had an infinitely long tape containing data. It would read the current cell on the tape, then either write something over it or move the tape left or right and update some internal state. A Universal Turing Machine was one where gentoo-wiki.org the tape could contain an encoded form of another Turing Machine. This is the basis of all modern programming – making a general purpose computing machine behave like a special purpose one. This resource is exclusively available to Brampton Road media, art and design students and is staffed by a dedicated team of technicians.

Our Libraries have Media Equipment available for you to borrow using your Cumbria Card. This includes video cameras, digital still cameras, tripods, microphones and audio recorders. Information Services can also support you in editing your captured media files. The university provides a range of Assistive Technology to support you no matter what your learning needs.

The distinction between a high-level and low-level language is a constantly moving boundary, but the first language to claim the title of a high-level language is generally considered to be FORTRAN. To me means only messaging, local retention and protection and hiding of state-process, and extreme late-binding of all things. There are possibly other systems in which this is possible, but I’m not aware of them.
